Authorities said that a smoking custodian sparked a fire that destroyed an elementary school by tossing his cigarette into a trash can.

Officials issued a summons to Jerome C. Higgins, 48, of East Brunswick, for smoking inside James Monroe Elementary School in Edison, N.J. The charge is a petty disorderly persons offense.

The fire began in a trash can inside the custodian's office and quickly spread throughout the school, officials said.

About a dozen firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

The school enrolled about 500 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is continuing to investigate the fire. If you have any information, you can call (732) 745-3300.
