Local 15-Month Old Boy Battling Rare Brain Condition

Posted: Updated:

A local 15-month old boy is in a fight for his life. He's battling a rare brain condition. FOX 29's Thalia Perez has more on his courageous journey.

Baby Jase Joseph Flood is smiling at home with his parents in a home video, but so far in his short life he's faced with many obstacles, and continues to beat the odds.

Shortly after birth, his family says he was diagnosed with Lobar holoprosencephaly, a rare congenital brain malformation. Doctors told his mom and dad that in most cases babies don't make it far and die before they're born.

As a result, baby Jase is mentally disabled. The family also soon learned he was blind and hearing impaired. Fighting the odds, Jase made it to his first birthday and other milestones.

"It makes me feel so good that after everything he's been through he's still my baby. He's still in there. He knows it's me and he knows its dad," said KC Ritterson, Jase's mother.

Now at 15-months baby Jase is fighting his toughest battle yet. He's in the intensive care unit at St. Christopher's Hospital. His parent's say he was admitted with a high fever but his heart stopped beating that first day and doctors administered CPR for 35 minutes before he came back to life.

It's been an uphill battle for him. He's had pneumonia and a staph infection. KC shared photos with FOX 29 when they held him for the first time in three weeks.

"When I finally got to hold him, you could just see it in him. This is my mom. I'm good. As soon as his dad held him he went right to sleep," said Ritterson.

She says doctors tell her they don't know what to expect but they have faith.

"We have meetings with doctors and we don't know what's going to happen. I know that my kid is still in there. No matter what they tell me medically," she said.

KC and Joe say they have a strong circle of support and their families are planning a fundraiser to offset some of their expenses.
