Late Tuesday afternoon, the man accused of hitting and killing an Army veteran while driving drunk near Hinckley, Minn., last June entered a guilty plea, admitting he had 9 drinks and 4 shots before the crash.

Derek Sanders, 31, entered his guilty plea in Pine County for his role in the crash that left 24-year-old Trevor Langlois critically injured on an Interstate 35 ramp. Langlois spent days in the hospital before he succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind his wife and young son, Ethan.

The plea deal calls for just one year spent in county jail, but Langlois family told Fox 9 News they "felt compelled" to sign off on it or else risk Sanders walking.

Sanders was arrested by state troopers at his parents' home in Wyoming, Minn., after a tip was reported to Bloomington police that the suspect vehicle may have been found. Troopers followed the lead and a pickup truck matching the one they were seeking and found it was registered to Sanders; however, he maintains he does not remember hitting Langlois.

No criminal record can be found for Sanders, but Fox 9 News learned he did receive four traffic citations within the last 10 years -- including driving without insurance and without a seatbelt in 2004 and speeding tickets in 2006 and 2007.
