Only On Fox: Police Say Parents Attacked Students, Teachers At School

PHILADELPHIA -

Parents have a lot of questions after adults apparently got into a local school and witnesses say they assaulted 10 students, two teachers and a school police officer.

Witnesses say parents and other family members carried out these attacks.

"No way in the world somebody should come inside a school, parents, and touch nobody's child," says Debbie Hayes after her 15 year old daughter was attacked during a melee touched off by the parents of another student. It all happened on the third floor at the Jay Cooke Elementary School Tuesday afternoon in between classes.

"It's absurd, it's sick, you have to be crazy to do something like that," Hayes told FOX 29.

"It is a shock when you hear about adults basically breaking into a school and making their way to a classroom to assault minors," said School District spokesman Fernando Gallard.

Hayes says her daughter had her hair ripped out and suffered a concussion at the hands of parents. Police say 10 students, two teachers and a school police officer were punched and thrown into lockers by family members of a student who came to the school to confront another student.

"Today we got buzzed in with ID's. Yesterday the parents came in without ID's. How did that happen," Hayes asked.

Witnesses told FOX 29 the confrontation brought police and paramedics to the school causing chaos in the hallway. Danielle Johnson's son was an innocent bystander who got knocked around during the melee.

"Children are supposed to be safe in school, parents shouldn't be going up to the school assaulting the kids," Johnson told FOX 29.

The school district says detectives and school police have identified two adults and a teenager who touched off the brawl. School security has been stepped up. Several sources told FOX 29, the school did not go on lock down during the incident, causing further concern for other students.

"They just need some staff that's why I'm here to volunteer," Hayes explained.

"It was a very fast moving situation, again with one officer trying to handle a very difficult situation," Gallard said.

Gallard says the lone school police officer on duty actually tried to prevent the parents and their teenager child from entering the classroom, but was overwhelmed by the angry family members. At least two teachers also tried to intervene.

Gallard says the district would like to have more security at the school, but is currently dealing with strapped resources.

He later said the district wants the parents and the third family member arrested and prosecuted to send a message that this behavior will not be tolerated.
