Boston Mourning Loss Of 2 Fallen Firefighters In 9-Alarm Blaze

Posted: Updated:

It was like a blowtorch. That's how Boston fire officials describe the scene of Wednesday's deadly fire.

Firefighters say fierce winds help fuel the fire that trapped several firefighters.

Lt. Edward Walsh, 43, a father of three, and Michael Kennedy, 33, a Marine Corps combat veteran, were killed battling the nine-alarm fire.

And more than a dozen firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it appears to have been accidental.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the basement of a four-story brownstone. Smoke and flames were quickly pouring from the roof and windows.

According to the Boston Fire Dept., a basement window shattered and likely blew the fire back at Walsh and Kennedy, trapping them inside.

It was a sad day for the city of Boston. Firefighters who were in town from Washington, D.C., stopped by Engine 33 on Boylston Street to salute the fallen firefighters. People came by and placed flowers at the firehouse.

Fox's Catherine Parrotta joined "Good Day Philadelphia" live from the scene of the fire in the Back Bay neighborhood.
