Logan Township Police Warn of Gas Bill Scam

Posted: Updated:
Logan Township, NJ -

A scam in New Jersey is targeting businesses and bilking hundreds of dollars and it all begins with a threatening phone call from someone posing as a worker from South Jersey gas.

"They actually called and asked for the owner who wasn't in today and then asked for accounts payable," said Susan Moore about a call she received early this afternoon. She was at work at Marathon Engineering and Environmental Service in Logan Township. It was a man claiming to work in the billing department at South Jersey Gas.

"He wasn't very nice and he said you know you owe a lot of money to South Jersey Gas and we're going to turn off your service. You have to pay it right now," said Moore. She instantly knew something wasn't right and was ending the call just as mail arrived. In it was a letter from Logan Township Police warning of this scam. Police say they've gotten calls from nine businesses reporting these bogus calls. Two actually paid the fake bill.

"They're using strong arm tactics and the corporate world doesn't typically work in that matter," said Captain Robert Leash. He says the caller gives the name of Jason Martinez or Mark Lopez and the call may show up as Vineland on Caller ID with the number 856-204-8991. They're contacting a variety of businesses like food service providers, production facilities and warehouses. Police are now alerting local businesses.

"Whoever receives the call needs to work off their senses. If it doesn't sound right typically it isn't right," said Captain Leash.

Police say if you get a call like this hang up and call them or South Jersey Gas directly at 609-561-9000 or 888 766-9900.
