Surveillance Video Shows Deadly Police Chase

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

FOX 29 obtained surveillance video showing the police chase that ended with a suspect being shot and killed by police.

Prosecutors say the chase began in Pleasantville when officers responded to a Mexican restaurant because of reports of a man with a gun.

The surveillance footage showed a black SUV speed up Atlantic Avenue. The driver appeared to drop something out the window while being chased by more than 20 police cars. The chase ended at Missouri avenue with the black vehicle sideways.

"I was at Caesar's at orientation and I looked out the window and saw a bunch of cop cars whizzing by and I looked out the window a couple minutes later and I saw all the roads taped off," witness Thomas Portnoy said.

Other witnesses described hearing an exchange of gunfire involving automatic weapons.

According to reports, a bullet hole went through the car of Atlantic City's Emergency Management Director.

We're told no officers were injured, but the suspect, 27-year-old Antoquan Watson, was killed at the scene.

The fatal shooting happened right in front of Tanger Outlets the Walk shopping center, and just a few blocks from the casinos.

Hours later, the scene still shook up shoppers.

"I just drove by with my husband wondering what is going on and I'm like can I even go in the stores? I come out here for vacation and it's a little scary. You come out here to relax and you've got to be worrying about stuff like this," concerned shopper Crystal Jimenez said.

Locals said they're not used to seeing major crime in this part of Atlantic City.

"Yeah I'm worried about working in this area. People are getting shot out here, I don't want to be walking the streets one day and get shot," Lance Gatewood said.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office continues to investigate the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.

The AC Emergency Management Director whose car was shot was actually supposed to retire recently, but the new mayor asked him to stay on.
