FBI Most Wanted list fugitive in custody in New York

MYFOXNY.COM -

Reputed gang member Juan Elias Garcia is in federal custody and back in New York just two days after being added to the FBI's Most Wanted list, the bureau said.

Juan Elias Garcia, an alleged member of the MS-13 gang, surrendered to authorities in Nicaragua and voluntarily returned to New York to face charges in connection with the execution-style murders of his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Argueta, 19, and her 2-year-old son, the FBI said.

However, Nicaraguan police said that Garcia was arrested near the U.S. Embassy in Managua, the AP reported.

Garcia is accused of luring Argueta and her son to the woods in Central Islip, Long Island, back on February 4, 2010, where he and two other gang members shot them, the FBI said.

"Juan Elias Garcia was placed on the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list because of the heinous nature of his crimes," the FBI's George Venizelos said in a statement. "News media outlets, both domestic and abroad, displayed Garcia's photograph to members of the public hoping someone would turn him in. The pressure generated by this publicity was too much for Garcia to bear, resulting in his surrender and return to the United States."

Three Nassau County beaches have been closed to bathing due to heavy rainfall. County health officials say storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels and affect bathing water quality. The three South Shore beaches that were closed Monday are: Hewlett Point Beach; Island Park Beach; and Merrick Estates Civic Association. In addition, Biltmore and Philip Healey beaches in Massapequa remain closed to bathing due to elevated levels of bacteria.
