NEW YORK (AP) — A schizophrenic who killed a New York City psychotherapist in a meat cleaver attack he said he was too sick to know was wrong has been convicted of murder.

Jurors delivered their verdict Friday in David Tarloff's trial. It was prosecutors' third attempt at convicting him in a case delayed for years by questions about his mental health.

Tarloff never disputed killing psychologist Kathryn Faughey in February 2008. His defense argues he shouldn't be held criminally accountable.

But the Manhattan district attorney's office said Tarloff knew what he was doing in attacking Faughey after she confronted him in her Upper East Side office. Tarloff had gone there aiming to rob her officemate.

Tarloff's attorney said he is disappointed with the decision and will appeal it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
