$200 TIP: Perkins server thanks mystery woman for college fund boost

Posted: Updated:
LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (KMSP) -

One generous customer has become the talk of the town in Little Falls after a Perkins server discovered a patron had left a $200 tip on a tab that only totaled $14.

In Little Falls, the Perkins restaurant and bakery is part hometown diner and part pit stop off Highway 10, but for 19-year-old Tori Dobis, it's a place she loves.

"If I could, I would waitress here until I die," Dobis said.

Dobis loves what she does and shows it with a ubiquitous smile and her infectious laugh.

"Whenever I work, I'm always bubbly and happy," she explained.

That chipper attitude caught the attention of a customer who came into the restaurant last Friday night to order French toast with a side of sausage.

"I could probably pick her out if I saw her in a group," Dobis said. "She seemed really nice and everything. I helped her, went and checked to see how her food was, went to check again and she was gone."

Gone -- but never to be forgotten. The woman dropped a $200 tip that brought Dobis to tears.

"I started crying," she admitted. "Really, I want to find this lady and hug her. Thank you."

The restaurant manager even asked the woman three times whether she actually wanted to leave the $200 tip. Each time, she answered, "Absolutely!"

Days later, Dobis is still on Cloud 9 and figures that the $200 is more than a week's worth of tips, possibly two. Now, that money is earmarked toward her nursing studies.

"Even people here come over and say, 'Do something for yourself! You deserve it!'" Dobis said. "No, I'll save it. I want to make it worth something someday."

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
