Police Arrest Gunman Who Opened Fire On Them Overnight

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We're following a developing story out of Upper Darby. A suspect who shot at Philadelphia police has been nabbed and officers have recovered the gun and getaway car he fled in.

Now, they want the driver of that car.

This all happened after 2 a.m. Thursday morning at 69th and Walnut streets in Upper Darby.

Two Philadelphia police officers driving a marked police van tried to pull over a vehicle that was being driven erratically. The car took off, and police did not chase it.

Police see the vehicle again just a few minutes later, a few blocks away. This time, the passenger jumps out of the car, police get out to chase, and at some point when the man is about 20 feet away from them he opens fires at them.

Police say the officers did not return fire. The man then, for some reason, dropped the gun and ran off.

"The officers who were fired upon showed a lot of restraint," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "They did not return fire. Now, these officers were in a marked police wagon, they were both in full uniform, and this individual, unbeknownst to the officers, was under an active warrant and armed with a gun – he was that desperate to get away. And that's more than likely why he fired at police. But police could not get a shot on this individual, so they did not discharge their weapons. There were no injuries to police."

Other officers then found the suspect and took him into custody a few blocks away.

The original officers who were targeted later positively identified the suspect.

As for that warrant, Small said, "He's 23 years of age. After running him through the computer, it turns out he was wanted on an active warrant for a violent crime. I can't get into specifics, but he was wanted on active warrant. So, they took a dangerous, wanted criminal off the streets, and they did recover a weapon. The weapon that's on the scene is a ... small-caliber revolver, but it is in fact loaded."

Small added, "There were several private surveillance cameras on businesses in the area, so hopefully these cameras recorded something to help the investigation."
