A transgender student is having a difficult time getting a dorm room at a college in Newburg, Oregon.
Jaycen, who goes by ‘Jayce,' is currently a sophomore at the Christian college in Newberg. He has been undergoing a female-to-male transition over the past few years.
Next week, a judge will issue a court order affirming his gender, allowing him to change his gender on his driver's license, birth certificate and with Social Security.
Jaycen has been living in a female dorm at George Fox University. He's been trying to get a new dorm in male housing, but the university says they can give him a single room.
Jayce's attorney, Paul Southwick, says that's not good enough. He spoke to KPTV on the phone.
"It didn't seem right or appropriate to be living with females any longer -- so he requested to live with males the following year," he said. "Given some of his mental health concerns, as well as his desire to have an active and vibrant social life, that wasn't going to really be an option for him -- a safe option for him."
Conner Magee, a student a George Fox University supports Jaycen.
"I really think it's important to have an open and loving dialogue about this - that's one thing I care deeply about - that we all respect each other." he said.
In a statement, the university says: "George Fox strives to be a Christ-centered community, and our residential facilities are single-sex because of our theological commitments. The student's request to switch from female-only on-campus housing to male only-on campus housing is one that many institutions would struggle with."
Jayce's mom created a website which has already gotten more than a thousand signatures in support.
