Jenkintown Police Need Help With Medical Bill For Recovering K-9

JENKINTOWN, Pa. -

"It was devastating. He is a partner. I'm with him more than anyone in my life. He's with me 24/7," said Jenkintown Police Patrol Sergeant Richard Tucker. His K-9 partner "Rocky" is in a fight for his life after a six hour emergency surgery.

"He threw up in the back of the car, which is not the most upsetting thing for a dog to do but he did it again and then again. That's when I realized there was definitely something going on with the dog. He started having disposition changes, he was very lethargic and had insatiable drinking," said Sergeant Tucker.

Doctors determined that the 7-year-old German Shepherd, who works as a patrol and narcotics officer, had life threatening problems forcing them to remove part of his colon.

"It was described to me as a spasm in the colon and lower intestines. Everything knotted up which caused the lack of blood flow to the organs and to that area," said Rocky's handler.

Rocky came home Monday, but is under close watch the next few weeks. In the meantime, Chief Albert DiValentino says the department needs help paying Rocky's medical bills which exceed $8,000.

"If people can donate a dollar or two it adds up," said Chief DiValentino. He says people are already reaching out to help, including those coming to the township to pay fines.

"They'd be satisfying a parking ticket and would see the poster on the wall about Rocky and they're kind enough even though they just got a parking ticket to donate $20 to the dog," he said.

It could be weeks before Rocky goes back to work if his recovery goes well.

"The emotional trauma. It's very difficult," said Sergeant Tucker.
