Motive Sought After More Than 20 Stabbed At Pa. School

Posted: Updated:

Police remain at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville as they try to find a motive for Wednesday morning's attack.

More than 20 people were hurt when a 16 year-old armed brought two kitchen knives to school and began stabbing and slashing in the hallway of the Pittsburgh area school.

Investigators say this attack last nearly five minutes, and it all unfolded around 7 a.m., just as students were getting to school.

The suspect, Alex Hribal, is being held at a local jail. He's been charged as an adult.

Victims were rushed to four nearby hospitals, some with serious, deep wounds. At least five are still in critical condition.

As with all such cases of tragedy, there are stories of heroism emerging.

A campus police officer and an assistant principal tackled the sophomore suspect with help from a senior student named Ian Griffith.

"Mr. King immobilized him he pinned him down," Griffith said. "I jumped on top of him, as well and just held down his wrists and arms and tried to keep the knives stationary."

And another student pulled the fire alarm to get students out the building. His name is Nate Scimio. Authorities say his quick thinking likely saved dozens of lives.

"There are a number of heroes on this day," Gov. Tom Corbett said on Wednesday. "Many of them are students. Students who stayed with their friends and did not leave their friends. Cafeteria workers who automatically, just reactively, began caring for students who were bleeding."

Hribal's defense attorney says his client has no prior criminal record and no history of addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Some of the teen's neighbors describe him as a good kid who never showed any signs of trouble.

Investigators are looking into reports of an altercation between the suspect and another student the night before the attack. They also went to the teen's home Wednesday night, where they seized his computer.

Hribal faces adult charges with multiple counts of aggravated assault and attempted murder.

Police remain at the school as investigators still consider it a crime scene. They say it could be several days before they finish collecting all the evidence.
