Mother Speaks Out After Girl, 12, Hurt In Alleged Hit-And-Run

PHILADELPHIA -

A young girl is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a car in Kensington. Now, the search is on for the driver.

"It's sad. I hate to see her laying there  because she's sad," says Dawn Arnold, the girl's mother.

Arnold says it's heartbreaking to sit in her daughter's hospital room and watch Jamiyah in pain after an alleged hit-and-run accident that left the 12-year-old with a potentially-serious injury.

"It's rough, you know? I haven't been able to sleep," Arnold told FOX 29 in an exclusive interview. "I'm just worried because my daughter was laying out there."

Arnold and police say Jamiyah had just exited the Market-Frankford El station and was crossing the street headed to school when she was hit by a woman driving a white Nissan Maxima.

"People around said she was on her phone when she hit my daughter," Arnold said.

Arnold say Jamiyah hit the windshield and was knocked unconscious. She was lying in the street when two good Samaritans stopped to help her and called an ambulance.

"I just want to thank them so much for being there for my daughter. One is Ms. Judy, one is Ms. Rosie. I appreciate those two ladies," she added.

Jamiyah was raced to St. Christopher's Hospital with a cut to her face that required stitches and a laceration on her liver. The sixth-grader was scheduled to run in her first competitive track meet on Saturday.

"She's gonna miss that for the first time, and that's what really hurts her a lot," Arnold explained.

The mother says witnesses told her the female driver did stop at the accident scene until the ambulance arrived and then left before police got there. She wants the woman to come forward.

"I have no idea who the person is. I really wish she would come forward and give her information up so we know who she is," she said.

Police are looking for a white Nissan Maxima, possibly a 2004 or 2005 model. It may have windshield and mirror damage.

Jamiyah is expected to remain in the hospital until at least Sunday. Doctors told her mom she won't be able to run track for at least a month.
