Would your boss pay you to quit if you were unhappy? That's what Amazon is offering for its workers at fulfillment centers across the country.
FOX Business reports that each employee could net up to $5,000 to turn in their notice. The program is called Pay to Quit. The idea is to let those who aren't committed to their jobs to leave on their own.
After the first year of employment, a worker could get $2,000 in severance pay with the bonus topping out at $5,000 in the fourth year.
CEO Jeff Bezos explains the program in his 2013 letter to shareholders:
"Once a year, we offer to pay our associates to quit. The first year the offer is made, it's for $2,000. Then it goes up $1,000 a year until it reaches $5,000."
The theory is that employees who stay, but are unhappy, make the work place unhealthy for others.
"The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want," Bezos said.
No word on how many employees have taken the deal.
