Bomb Sniffing Military Dog Retires

Posted: Updated:

Eddie, the bomb sniffing dog, who served five years in the military, is retiring.

In a ceremony today in Tampa, Eddie, was retired with full military honors.

Eddie and his partner staff sergeant, Shannon Hutto, were assigned to MacDill's sixth security forces squadron.

"Today is kind of emotional for me, seeing Eddie leave the kennels it always hurts, but I'm glad to see him go, he did his service and I'm just happy for him," says Hutto.

Eddie is credited with helping sniff out two improvised explosive devices saving the lives of the soldiers in the patrol unit.

She recalls, "While we were over in Afghanistan he cleared the path for me, when we were outside doing combat patrols he made sure everywhere I stepped didn't have any explosives, he helped us find Taliban insurgents, just a multiplier, force multiply."

Eddie will retire to civilian life with his original handler.
