One Wife's Gift Saves Her Husband's Life

An Indiana man with a rare autoimmune disorder says his wife's act of selflessness has brought them even closer together.

In 2001, Tony Klepinger was diagnosed with a rare disease called nephritis.

Tony was able to control the disease for close to twelve years with diet and exercise.

Tony recalls, "I would get tired easily, and I had some joint problems."

But last year his health took a turn for the worse and his doctor told him he needed a kidney from a living donor; thankfully, he was able to find a donor special to him.

His wife Julie donated her kidney.

Tony's sister and his wife were matches. Doctors worried it could be hereditary, so his wife stepped up.

"When we met and he told me about his disease, I always knew if he needed a kidney I would be willing to donate," says Julie.

Tony is now fully recovered from his kidney transplant and healthy again.

The Klepingers say the journey brought them even closer together.

Julie explains, "There's an organ of mine in him! That has definitely grown us closer."

Both Tony and Julie say they feel healthy and back to normal and hope their story inspires people to consider being an organ donor.
