Fake Kidnapping Video Angers Parents

Posted: Updated:

A group of parents and children are anything but amused at a video production attempt in Sequim, Washington.

Witnesses say they saw a man in a ski mask snatch up a little boy at a local park and pull him into a van and drive away on Tuesday.

Some parents tried to run after the van to get the license plate. While others called 9-1-1 and reported an abduction.

However, the masked man came back saying it was all a set-up for an educational video on kidnapping awareness.

Parents say the act was reckless and not smart to do in a park full of children.

"I saw this guy, he's wearing a mask, just two-handed grabs this kid, and jumps into the van and takes off," said witness Rebekah Asin.

Another witness, Tiffany Barnett, said she tried to chase after the man.

"Trying to run after them, trying to get the number, their license plate number," she said.

Asin explained that the parents were furious over the incident, and the children were scared.

"People are angry when they are taken advantage of. When they are the butt of the joke, it's never funny," said Sequim Police Department Chief Bill Dickinson.

"Absolutely moronic. It's appalling they would do that in front of all these people with their kids," said Barnett, "My daughter is still terrified. She'll tell you right now. What if they take me? What if they take me?"

The video was posted online for a while but since taken down.

Police said no crime was committed, so no charges are being filed.
