Good Samaritan Talks After Mom Allegedly Drove Kids Into River

FLORENCE TWP., N.J. -

A Burlington County mom is accused of trying to kill her children by driving them into the Delaware River, and now we're hearing from the man who rescued her three teenagers from the water.

Police say Joann Smith, of Florence Township, drove her kids off a boat ramp dock into the river.

Witnesses say just moments before the family had been having ice cream at a shop across the street.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.

"I looked at my wife, and I'm like, 'Oh my God, it looks like there's a car in the water.' And I could hear people screaming – well, I heard a young girl screaming. So, I just took off my jacket, jumped in, and just swam out there," said one Good Samaritan, Darnell Young.

Smith is now charged with attempted murder.

Her husband says she has suffered from "mental issues" over the past 10 years and recently had trouble with her medications.

He says his wife is aware of what happened.

FOX 29's Jenni Joyce has more details in this report.

Smith was originally expected to appear in a New Jersey courtroom on Thursday, just a couple days after the incident. But the hearing was postponed.
