Local Dog Walking Watch Keeps The Streets Safe

Posted: Updated:
LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. -

You've heard of the neighborhood watch. But what about the dog walking watch? It's a new program designed to make local streets safer and it's getting a lot of buzz.

Fox 29's Sabina Kuriakose reports from Lower Merion.

Napoleon may only weigh 8-pounds, but this dog and his owner, Kathy, want criminals looking to mess with their neighborhood to know they're barking up the wrong tree.

"Unfortunately, there's been a lot of crime in the community lately, and who better knows what's going on then people that are outside all the time," Kathy said.

Luna and Murray are also on the lookout. Eileen is a member of Dog Walker Watch, a crime awareness program in Lower Merion Township. Law enforcement trains dog owners to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in their community as they walk their pets. They had a second training session in Bala Cynwyd.

"We're trying to make a partnership between the community members and the police department. We need the community to report suspicious persons," said Officer Frank McCormick.

People who own dogs are walking early in the morning, maybe late at night, during the day, and police can't be everywhere at all times," said Ilene Wellner.

Eileen owns her pet walking business, Dog on Walking, she's training her staff to be alert and aware.

"It might be, landscaping truck that wasn't there before. It might be someone walking up and down the street that doesn't seem to have a purpose," she said.

"People are out any way. You're not making a major commitment in your life. Peoples' time is short," said Matt Peskin with the National Association of Town Watch.

Matt started the program the latest twist on a neighborhood watch.

"There was a fire down the street. A wire was on fire and we did call 9-1-1. So you just become more lear receive what's going on,"Kathy said.

The program is already getting so popular that organizers are getting calls from other municipalities even other states wanting to start programs of their own. The next training session is in mid-May.
