Nebraska School Apologizes For Bad Bullying Advice

Posted: Updated:

Bullying has become a big problem across the country, but in Nebraska one principal told students not to tell on their tormentors, according to a flier issued to students.

The principal at Zeman Elementary, Donna William, handed out fliers about how to deal with bullies.

However, some of the advice didn't sit well with parents, especially rule number seven.

That rule advises students not to tattle on the bully. While another rule told students to not be a sore loser.

"We're kind of shocked, it was completely opposite of what we expect about this, and everything we've heard from them so caused alarm when we read it," said parent Ben Dinger, "Every once in a while everyone makes a mistake, right?"

On Wednesday the principal issued an apology. Lincoln Public Schools is also apologizing for the flier saying this is not their philosophy on how to deal with bullies.

"The wrong pamphlet was sent out, and some of the information was not part of what our practices and beliefs about response to bullying situations would be," Russ Uhing, LPS director of student servies, said.

Uhing also explained that they take the correct action needed if a bully situation should arise.

"If there is a situation that they think is a bullying situation, we want to make sure that our staff know about it that they can look into it and take correct action we need," Uhing said.

"Everybody screws up, or every once in a while something gets miscommunicated, but how they are reacting is, in my opinion, admirable," Dinger said.

Staff will visit the 5th grade students who received this flier to explain what happened.

The staff will then inform students on the proper way to handle situations involving bullying.
