9-month-old conjoined twins, now separated, leave Texas hospital

Posted: Updated:

The health of two young conjoined twins -- separated last summer -- has steadily improved, and they were released from a Dallas hospital Wednesday.

"We are thrilled and so excited. Nervous to learn everything we need to take care of these babies as well as they've been taken care of here. We're just so excited," said Jenni Ezell, their mother.

"There's definitely mixed emotions. We've been waiting for this day for a long time and we're excited to take the next step to get these boys home," added Dave Ezell, their father.

Owen and Emmett Ezell were born in July, joined at the abdomen. They shared a liver and bowels, and they had a birth defect that left their intestines covered by a thin layer of tissue outside of their tiny bodies.

A few months later, doctors at Medical City Children's Hospital performed the nine-hour surgery to separate them.

The boys are no longer being fed intravenously, but continue to be fed through tubes in their stomachs. And instead of being hooked to breathing machines, they now need only the assistance of a trachea tube.

They will move to a local inpatient rehabilitation center.

"They're sitting up on their own, trying to coo over the vent-trache. They're wanting to communicate and make noise. They're very interactive. They're social boys. They flirt with all the girls that come in. They flash smiles and wave. They're what they're supposed to be," Jenni Ezell continued.

The Ezells came to North Texas from Oklahoma for their sons' care. They have two other children and plan to move into a new home in Grand Prairie soon.
