An undercover narcotics police officer was shot during a drug buy in a parking lot in Bergen County, N.J., Tuesday afternoon, officials said. The shooting happened at about 1:45 p.m. at a Walmart and Marshalls shopping center in Garfield.

The cop was inside a car parked in the lot doing a $400 marijuana drug buy with a suspect when another man came up to the car and shot the cop in the hip and ankle during a struggle, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said. Other officers who were watching the drug buy shot and wounded the gunman, he said.

Cops arrested two suspects at the parking lot, while one other suspect fled in a car. New Jersey State Police arrested that suspect on the Garden State Parkway near the Essex toll plaza.

The wounded suspect was hospitalized.

The officer underwent surgery at Hackensack University Hospital and is expected to recover, Molinelli said. He is a nine-year veteran of the Paramus Police Department assigned to the county's narcotics task force.
