God's Love We Deliver virtual bake sale for birthday cakes

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

God's Love We Deliver provides meals to people in the New York City area who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves.

"At Gods Love bringing a meal to someone's door can make someone's day, but that smile that you get can mean so much more to you," says Emmett Findlay, the organization's communications manager. He says the Brooklyn-based nonprofit has almost 8,000 volunteers every year.

Chuck Pierkararski, more commonly known as "Chuck the Baker," has been making and personalizing birthday cakes for God's Love clients, their children, and their caregivers for more than 20 years.

"It's like saying we know you are there, we are celebrating you, we love you," he says.

Clients also receive birthday cards that are decorated by local school students. Sometimes a cake is the only birthday gift that God's Love's clients will receive.

So to celebrate the organization's 29th birthday, God's Love is having a bake sale that allows anyone to donate $10 and sponsor a client's cake.

Viola Davis, 84, has breast cancer. She has been receiving meals from God's Love for about two years. She says that receiving a birthday cake was a pleasant surprise.

"It makes me feel good to know that there is someone out there that really cares for me," he says.

Report: health risks at some nail salons

One of the most surprising findings in a report from the New York City public advocate is that city officials have virtually no authority over how nail salons are run. The city can't enforce standards like they do with restaurants, so it's clearly a case of beauty buyer beware. We get our nails done without thinking too much about it.
