WEST CHESTER, Pa. -

Police have arrested a Chester County woman accused of embezzling money from her employer.

Joyce Hawkins, a former senior level employee of ModSpace, had the ability to set up accounts and order payments from ModSpace to other businesses.

ModSpace is global supplier of both permanent and temporary modular construction, with corporate headquarters in Berwyn and Chester County.

According to a police report, she set up accounts and order payments from ModSpace to other businesses including a nonprofit organization registered in her name “Caring Hearts, LLC”.

Hawkins, 59 began working at the company in 2009. Detectives say she used the names of former employees of ModSpace as part of the payments to Caring Hearts in order to cover up the criminal activities.

Detectives learned she also listed her daughter as the president of Caring Hearts and forged her daughter’s name on a tax document. Using this scheme, the defendant embezzled $1,035,763.55 from ModSpace during the time period 2010 - 2014.

“This case is about greed, greed, and more greed. The defendant was a highly compensated employee, but decided to abuse her position of trust to steal money from her employer. Her conduct is an insult to every person who does an honest day’s work and lives on an honest day’s wage,” said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

In early April, Hawkins announced she was resigning from ModSpace to take another job. ModSpace discovered suspicious activity after she announced her resignation but before her scheduled last day, which led to a criminal investigation.

Officials say during the time of her announcement and her last day, she attempted to have ModSpace make two more payments to Caring Hearts for an additional $122,510.56.

An investigation revealed Hawkins used the money she was stealing to support her lifestyle. She bought a vacation home in the Chesapeake Bay area. She kept two boats at the vacation home, including a recently purchased $19,000 boat. In 2013, she received more than $200,000 in compensation from her employer. The money that she stole was in addition to her legitimate earnings.

Hawkins has been charged with felony theft, forgery, and related charges.
