Police Arrested Wilmington Man For A String Of Cigarette Burglaries

On April 8th around 12:00 a.m., police responded to a burglary alarm at the Walgreens, 1508 Philadelphia Pike. They found the front door shattered and approximately 30 cartons of cigarettes had been stolen from the business.

Then on April 10th police responded to another burglary at the BP gas station on the 4000 block of Lancaster Pike. A burglar shattered a glass door, entered the business, and removed cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Two attempted burglaries occurred during the early morning of April 12, one at the Shell gas station, 3001 New Castle Avenue, the other at the Cumberland Farms, 1703 New Castle Avenue. In both cases, the glass doors to the businesses were damaged but the suspect fled before taking merchandise.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on April 18 another burglary and cigarette theft occurred. This one took place at the Walgreens at 536 Main Street. The suspect shattered a glass door, entered the business, removed over $1,500 worth of cigarettes, and fled. Another burglary and cigarette theft occurred at the BP gas station during the early morning of April 22. There the suspect used a brick to shatter the store’s doo. r on Jay Drive , entered the business, and removed over 100 packages of cigarettes.

 Detectives identified the suspect in each incident as Brian Matthews, 37, of Wilmington. He was apprehended yesterday at a residence in the 700 block of Bennett Street.

Matthews was charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of attempted burglary, and related charges. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute on $18,000 cash, $13,100 unsecured bail.
