Hunter, Princeton, UConn among colleges probed over sex assault complaints

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Dozens of the nation's top universities and colleges are at the center of a federal investigation into how they handled sexual assault complaints. The schools in our area that made the list include Hunter College, University of Connecticut, and Princeton University.

The federal Office of Civil Rights and Education Department are clear that being on the list doesn't mean the school has violated the law; just that it is under investigation.

Addressing sexual assault on college campuses has been a hot topic in Washington recently, with President Barack Obama appointing a task force of Cabinet members to address the issue.

This week, the task force launched the website www.notalone.gov with resources on how to respond to and prevent sexual assault on college campuses with a public service announcement.

At CUNY's Hunter College, officials said the reason for the federal investigation stems from a student filing a complaint 15 months ago, and then withdrawing it 6 months later.

In a statement John Rose, the dean for diversity and compliance at Hunter, said in part:

"We have used our interactions with the Office of Civil Rights to improve and update the information and services we provide to students." He cited a campus town hall meeting held back in March where resources about sexual harassment and assault services were discussed.

New York City Public Advocate Leticia James said she will follow the lead of the White House and do more to address sexual assaults locally.

The Associated Press reported that the Education Department in 2011 publicized guidance on Title IX's sexual assault provisions, and complaints by students have increased.
