Police: Dispute Between Homeowner and Contractor Led To Shooting

Posted: Updated:
Police say a dispute between a homeowner and a local contractor over unfinished basement renovation work led to a shooting Thursday morning.

"A weapon is produced by the homeowner. The contractor tries to flee and is shot one time,"Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum with Northeast Detectives said.

Alicia Atcherson lives right across the street with her children. She says it all started with a loud argument and quickly escalated to violence.

“The next thing you know you heard gunshots coming from the home,” she said.

Detectives say the homeowner had paid the contractor nearly $10,000 three weeks ago to repair his roof, fix the foundation in his basement and do some electrical work at the house. Fed up with the pace of the construction work, the homeowner called the contractor to the house and things got ugly.

Police raced the contractor to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his side. The homeowner was taken in for questioning and remains in custody. Police say the contractor has a checkered past.

“He actually has a warrant right now for an alleged theft, he also might have other warrants in Florida and outside the surrounding counties,” Lt.  Rosenbaum said.

Neighbors say the contractor and the homeowner have been haggling over the work for weeks until it just boiled over.
