Robbers Pose As Gas Station Workers, Take Customers' Cash

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Police are searching for men who tied up a gas station clerk and then posed as employees, working the pumps and taking cash from unsuspecting customers.

Detectives tell FOX 29 News the guys go in to rob a busy Hess Station by Philadelphia International Airport on Island Avenue.

Apparently, the same guys who robbed this Hess station robbed another one on Passyunk Avenue last Wednesday, police now believe.

They went into the Island Avenue station at 1 a.m., went to the cash register and told the clerk to open it up. But they weren't happy with what little cash they got. And they apparently were not in a hurry to make their getaway.

So, the robbers stuck around. One was wearing a shirt with a Hess logo on it and began acting like he was working in the store and selling gas at a discount if everybody who drove in overnight agreed to pay cash.

Police don't know exactly how long this discount offer lasted, or how many customers came and went. But they do believe that this started around 1 a.m. and could have gone on for up to three and a half hours until these guys left and the clerk, who had been kept in the bathroom, got free and made a 9-1-1 call.

The robbers hit the clerk over the head with the gun, and a bullet fired when the gun went off, grazing the clerk's head.

Police are telling all stations in the city to be on the alert for this. They think the clerks may, at first, believe the man with the Hess shirt is a delivery guy.

The other unusual thing is that there aren't surveillance cameras at either of these Hess station.

What police are hoping for is that some customers who spoke to the guy, who they thought was an employee, will remember this and have some new information that investigators don't have right now.
