Camden Police Unveil Neighborhood Watch Program And App

CAMDEN, N.J. -

"This park, as beautiful as it is now, is a testament to the commitment of the county and the community to combating crime," said Bryan Morton who remembers just a few years ago what it was like.

"You could buy everything from cocaine to getting a prostitute to getting a mixed drink or hot meal," he said. That's because Pyne Poynt Park in Camden didn't look anything like it does now.

"The force was under manned with a 30 plus percent call in rate daily. They weren't coming in here," sid Bryan. But now there's open green space, a playground and new baseball fields. Bryan, who runs North Camden Little League wants to make sure it stays this way.

"I go on in the morning. I go in the afternoon and I go on in the evening," he said. Bryan signed up for ICAN which stands for Interactive Community Alert Network. It's a website created by the Camden County Metro Police Division. Bryan downloaded the app on his phone. It gives him access to pictures from police cameras around Camden including here at the park so he can report crime.

"You can then scroll down, pick a different camera location that you want to monitor and begin to make a report and direct police activity," said Bryan.

Officers in the Real Time Tactical Operational Intelligence Center handle the reports.

"You're having a real time live chat going back and forth with an analyst who can view with the camera system what it is you are alerting us to and at the same time direct resources to mitigate it," said Chief Scott Thomson with Camden County Police. He calls it the next generation of community policing.

"It's a day and age where virtually everyone has a smart phone these days so the community policing and how they're caring for their neighborhood is something they can do even when they're out and about," said Chief Thomson.
