2 Syrians In Custody After Jumping From Ship, Swimming For NJ

Posted: Updated:

Police in New Jersey say two Syrian nationals have been taken into federal custody after attempting to unlawfully enter the United States.

Police in Pennsville, Salem County, say the two men jumped from a shipping vessel Tuesday evening near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the men jumped from the Abou Karim III, a Lebanon-flagged livestock carrier.

They've been transferred into the custody of Homeland Security Investigations for questioning and face removal from the United States.

Pennsville police say in a news release that they apprehended one crew member shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday. That man was spotted on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property near Kilcohook allegedly attempting to break into a construction vehicle. He is identified as Omar Khalef, 18, of Syria.

The second crew member was apprehended while still in the Delaware River. Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Nick Ameen says a tugboat crew that spotted the men jumping pulled one of them from the water.

The rescued man was taken from the port to Wilmington Hospital and was being questioned by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

Taking part in the search were Pennsville police, CBP agents, the Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations, with field offices in Cherry Hill and Wilmington.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
