Elk Grove, CA-An unusual suspect leads police on a wild chase onto a major California highway and the streets of Elk.
About a dozen Elk Grove police officers and spectators kept their eyes glued to a dangerous and fast moving suspect this morning.
On the loose? Not a criminal.
But, a cow.
"She's not a gentle animal, so we didn't want anyone getting hurt," said John Ospinthal, who lent a helping hand.
California Highway Patrol spotted her on Highway 99 in Elk Grove around 4 a.m.
"She's been on the highway all night probably," said Ospinthal.
An animal that wouldn't cower, weaving through morning traffic and onto a field near Stockton and Elk Grove Boulevards
Ranchers and Elk Grove police joined the chase, fearing the cow would be a hazard for drivers.
They cornered the black angus on several instances.
The crafty cow maneuvered her way into a shopping center across the street.
Then, into another field.
"She's not afraid. She'll run you over," said Ospinthal.
Cowboy Hardesty Jr. was called out to help out the effort, and he brought along his horse.
"We just got a rope, got her closer to the trailer. Jerked her down, held her down and loaded her up," Hardesty said.
The cow was taken into custody after she escaped, but custody for this runaway means going back home.
You may think you've got your dog trained. But when was the last time you got a helping – mouth – carrying in the groceries?
