Ben Liken Gets Ready To Compete In The Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:

North Philadelphia-Over 35,000 athletes will participate in the Special Olympic Games next month in New Jersey.

That’s where Ben Liken will play the game he was never supposed to play; a game that's taught him to learn and to grow.

Fox 29’s Colleen Wolfe introduces us to Ben.

“I was told he would never walk, never talk, couldn't initiate anything, and I was also told not to bring him home from the hospital and that was just back in 1991,” his mother said.

Now, Ben Liken does more than anyone ever thought he would.

“It's given him a whole lot more confidence because he can do things on the court that some people think he shouldn't be able to do. And he's good at it,” his mother said.

Ben's other hobby isn't so common: helping other people.

"What other people consider to be a drudgery or a task he knows it's helpful for them," his mother said. "He will attach himself to people and do anything for them."

Something his church knows all too well.

"He will participate in our prayer time and we have to stop him because if we didn't he would pray for an hour," Pastor Ben said.

When's he's not praying at church, he's usually lending a hand to Pastor Ben.

A relationship that goes back to the day Ben was born.

He makes work that would normally be tedious, a little bit easier.

Ben has a heart big enough to except anyone with the intentions to help everyone.

Ben's involvement with the Special Olympics has given him the confidence to help himself and everyone around him.

He’ll be competing in the USA games, June 14th-21st in Trenton, New Jersey.
