Fort Myer, Va.-While many honor the sacrifices of U.S. service members, the sacrifices of the ones they leave behind are often overlooked.
However, one event seeks to recognize the dedication of military spouses.
The 7th annual Military Spouse of the Year luncheon honors spouses from every branch in the armed forces
The top prize for 2014 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse went to Marine wife Lakesha Cole.
She was honored for her work in the military community, which includes hosting daily mentoring and mini-workshops to help address the business needs of military spouse entrepreneurs.
The wife of Gunnery Sergeant Deonte Cole also runs a popular on-base boutique for women and girls.
And she has more plans in the works.
“I hope to bring more employment opportunities to military spouses, especially military spouses overseas. There are a lot of challenges over there with getting jobs. And I would also like to bring more entrepreneurship resources to military bases for spouses interested in becoming entrepreneurs and opening their own business," she said.
Her husband was front and center to see his wife receive the honor.
"It's really extraordinary because I’ve gone to a lot of places all over the world for deployments and it's very refreshing to know that I can focus on my mission and what I’m doing while I’m away, and know that the homefront is taken care of and she's gonna do everything as well if not better with me gone that she did when I was there. That eases my mind,” Sgt. Cole said.
And the Coles have yet another reason to celebrate because they’re expecting their second child in August.
