Daughter Nominates Widowed Mother For Makeover

Posted: Updated:

Delaware County, Pa.-A Delaware County single mom received a Mother's Day gift she won't soon forget.

Fox 29's Drew Dickman has the story.

Kathy Younkers’ young daughter nominated her for a makeover by writing an essay in school about what she means to her.

After everything Younkers has been through so far this year, she was overwhelmed with this Mother's Day weekend surprise.

"Happy Mother's Day!” the stylists at Marc Voci Salon and Color Bar said.

"My mom is different from any other mom,” 4th grader Erin Younkers read from her essay, “since my dad is not here, my mom works extra hard."

"I would never do this for myself,” Younkers said while getting her hair done.

Younkers' husband passed away three months ago after a long battle with cancer.

"During that rough time my mom stayed brave for me,” Erin said.

She still wears her wedding ring, and said his death had her dreading Mother's Day.

"That was the only reason why. It's my first Mother's Day without my husband Pat,” Kathy said.

"When you walk out those doors I want you to have that same feeling you have right now,” salon owner Marc Voci said.

For Voci and the team at Style Me Hired, this makeover was personal.

Voci was raised by a single mother and realized after meeting Kathy, that he was friends with her husband.

"I really believe in my heart that God brought us together to shine the light that she needs this weekend because it really is an emotional weekend for her,” Voci said.

Just as big of a surprise as the makeover, the words her daughter Erin shared about her in front of the whole salon.

"She's amazing. She's just like her dad. She's always thinking of other people,” Kathy said.

The results were transforming on the outside.

"Can we give Kathy a round of applause? Look how beautiful!” Voci said to a round of applause.

And within.

"I feel amazing. It's a big difference,” Kathy said.

Kathy's Mother's Day makeover didn't end there.

She was treated to lunch with her two children.

She plans to spend the holiday with her mother-in-law and the rest of her family.
