Vietnam War Veteran Receives Military Service Medal

Posted: Updated:

Westville, NJ – Robert “Harvey” Gsell, Vietnam War veteran and Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice patient, was honored on Monday by Samaritan and the Gloucester County Department of Veterans Affairs.

A ceremony was held at his Westville home for his service to our country during the Vietnam War. His family and closest friends were in attendance as he was honored.

“He’s just a good guy, and he deserves this. We’re really appreciative everyone came out today,” said his wife, Geri.

Gloucester County Director of Veterans Affairs Duane T. Sarmiento and Freeholder Deputy Director Joe Chila presented Harvey with the Military Service Medal.

Samaritan Social Worker Karen Emerle also presented Gsell with a special “Samaritan Cares for Vets” pin and certificate thanking him for his service.

Harvey enlisted in the Army in 1963 and was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division. In 1965, he was sent to Vietnam where he survived 3 battles during his 12-month tour, including the Battle of Ia Drang.

When Harvey returned home from Vietnam, he says he was ridiculed for his service and involvement in the war.

Gsell spent most of his life a loner and suffering from depression. In 1999, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. He survived that bout of cancer, however, he's been getting nutrients and sustenance from a feeding tube ever since.

In November, Harvey and his wife celebrated 40 years of marriage. A few weeks ago, Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice started providing comfort care to the veteran and his family in their time of need.

“None of this would have been possible without Samaritan. They are a good outfit!” his wife said.
