8-Year Old Girl Grabs Wheel When Mom Passes Out Driving

Posted: Updated:

An eight-year-old child saves the day when her mother falls unconscious behind the wheel.

Second Grader, Abby Porter, grabbed the wheel when her mother lost consciousness while driving in Galena, Kansas.

"I was trying to not panic and then I got the idea to grab the steering wheel," Abby said.

She was able to keep the car moving, and with the help of police officer, Jimmy Hamilton, she was able to bring the vehicle to a stop.

"I was driving then I turned around to get to my dad's house and then this police car came up,” she said.

“As I got beside the vehicle it looked like a female driver passed out having a medical emergency and a female juvenile female steering the vehicle from the passenger counsel side area," Hamilton said.

"He asked me if I could put it in park I said I don't know how," Abby said.

With both heading toward and intersection, Hamilton knew he had to act quickly. Luckily, he had a plan.

"Let her bump my vehicle into the back of me so I can stop it. She said she was scared she didn't want to do that," explained Hamilton.

Abby's father, Roger Porter, says he's very thankful his little girl is okay. She even made it back to school in time to take her spelling test!

"Very thankful the good Lord was on the situation and angels were beside those two," said Roger.
