Burlington City Police Investigate Two Attempted Child Lurings

Posted: Updated:

"My heart was bumping like really fast," said a 13-year old girl as she described how her heart raced when she says a strange man in a white car pulled up and tried to talk to her. We're concealing her identity to protect her.

"I didn't answer him and he said can I talk to you for a second. That's when I just kept walking," she said. But the man proceeded to cut her off by driving the car right in front of her. It happened around 3:00 Wednesday afternoon near East Broad and Library Street in Burlington City.

"That's when I ran the other way and he started following me," said the girl. She says she ran into one of her friends and the suspicious man sped off toward the river. The girl's grandmother says she never thought this would happen.

"I was very upset and disturbed about it," said the grandmother. She's even more concerned because the same thing happened to a 13-year old boy in the area of Wood Street and Morris Avenue just last week.

Police say a man, also in a white car, told the boy to get in the car and he'd give him lunch money. The boy ran off to Smith School nearby.

Detective Anna Czajka with Burlington City Police says they're working with schools and have sent home a letter warning parents of the incidents.

"Just because they were not touched they were still approached by unknown people and asked to get inside the car which is really dangerous. Those kids could have been pulled inside the car and we would have had an abduction," said Detective Czajka.

Police say the car in the first incident is a four door, white car, tan interior, black rims with no hub caps and has an antenna on the rear driver's side with a small yellow toy or ball on the tip. The car in the other incident is similar but the suspect descriptions differ.

Anybody with information pertaining to this incident is urged to call the City of Burlington Police Department at 609-386-0262
