Water Main Break Closes Verree Road For 3 Weeks

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A water main break in the Bustleton section of the city will continue to cause headaches for drivers into June.

The water main was fixed and water was restored in this area around 1:30 p.m., but the work is not done.

Verree will be blocked from Welsh to Pine Hill for at least the next three weeks.

“It looked like a geyser coming across the road there," resident John Despirita said.

Crews with the Philadelphia Water Department spent the afternoon cleaning up the 9700 block of Verree Road after a 12 inch water main burst around midnight.

15 properties, including a synagogue lost water until the afternoon.

“We couldn’t take showers, my husband had to go to his mother’s to take a shower and my son had to leave for work. We had bottled water we used to brush our teeth and he got water from somebody else to flush the toilets and everything," Wendy Miller said.

Wendy Miller works at the place of worship and school and lost a day of work because of the water main break.

“We don’t know if we’re going to have school tomorrow and if we do, the parents are going to have to go around another way. It’s going to be an inconvenience, but it will work," she said.

Her home also doubles as a part time place of business for her husband, meaning a change of schedule for the doctor and his patients.

“He works out of the hospital most of the time, so it will only affect a little bit, not too much, but it will affect his patients," Miller said.

Residents said the water drained into this creek, keeping it from pouring into their homes and causing damage.

While the road gets redone, they’re trying to remain positive about the temporary obstacle.

“To get out of here and come around and then ago all the way back around again to Welsh, eeeh and my son is going to be inconvenienced, but it’s something you have to put up with," Despirita said.

The cause of what broke this 54-year-old water main is under investigation.
