Some Criticize Gift Shop At 9/11 Memorial Museum

Posted: Updated:

The 9/11 Memorial Museum opens to the public on Wednesday, and that will include a museum shop.

But some feel selling souvenirs at the site is tainting the memory of the victims.

The gift shop includes sweat shirts, baseball caps and coffee mugs as well as educational materials.

A museum spokesperson says the items were chosen respectfully. Still, there's mixed reaction.

"What they've made the memorial is a revenue-generating tourist attraction. And that's not what it's meant to be. It's supposed to honor and memorialize our loved ones," one man said.

"We want our grandchildren to remember," said a woman. "And so if there's something from a memorial shop we can take home to remind them, I don't have a problem with merchandising of it at all."

Another issue with the gift shop is that it was open while family members of those who died were at the dedication ceremony last week.

Supporters of the museum point out there are museum shops at the Pearl Harbor Memorial and Holocaust Museum, among many others.
