New Jersey Officer Accused Of Lewd Act At Starbucks

Posted: Updated:

A Camden County police lieutenant is facing a lewdness charge after he is accused of exposing himself at a Cherry Hill Starbucks on May 7th.

According to police, Lt. Benito Gonzalez, head of the tactical narcotics unit, was charged with a disorderly persons offense.

Lieutenant Gonzalez is on unpaid suspension over the allegations he masturbated while sitting inside this Cherry Hill Starbucks in full view of customers and staff.

In a statement the Camden County Police Chief says the department is troubled by the allegations, and promises "a swift and thorough investigation."

Early in their investigation Cherry Hill police posted about the incident on their Facebook page looking for tips. That post was deleted when Gonzalez emerged as the suspect.

Gonzalez is now at the center of two investigations, one internal, the other criminal. Both Camden County and Cherry Hill police appear to be closing rank and declined requests to go on camera.

Lt. Gonzalez was issued a summons. He'll appear in court on June 4th.
