Hail Damages Cars, Skylights At Berks County Mall

Posted: Updated:
WYOMISSING, Pa. - Severe thunderstorms packed hail, which caused damage to cars outside as well as the inside of a shopping mall Thursday afternoon in Berks County.

The pelting hail looked more like a mid-winter snow storm. The epicenter of the damage was around Wyomissing.

One apartment building suffered major hail damage, every single window on the side of the building was broken.

The afternoon storm came in fast, and left behind millions of dollars in damage.

The Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing also suffered immense damage during the storms that rumbled through in the late afternoon.

The sunroof and windows were shattered on several cars, and hail that didn't melt away still sat inside some cars 3 hours later.

"We just heard the noise and heard everything crashing down," said Tom Satterfield.

Satterfield took video shortly after a half dozen domed skylights came shattering down in the middle of the mall.

"People were walking out in the parking lot like the walking dead," said Teresa Distefano of Reading.

Sunroofs and windows shattered. While car hoods and roofs were left with more dimples than a golf ball.

Then, there's Mike Destefano's brand new Subaru.

"3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago exactly," said Destefano. "It's totaled that's about it there's nothing you can do."

Nearly every car in the lot suffered damage. A parade of tow truck drivers were shuttling damage cars off the lot all night.

Nearby homes were also picking up the pieces of a fast moving hail storm. Residents say it was the strongest storm they've ever felt.

The Berkshire Mall was closed for the remainder of the day. They will try to open tomorrow.

Tow truck drivers estimate thousands of cars suffered damage from Thursday's storm.
