Surprise Prom Thrown For NJ Mother

Posted: Updated:
DEPTFORD, N.J. -

A South Jersey family got to show their mom just how much they love her on Saturday.

Fox 29's Dave Kinchen has the story.

It was a night of magic for Cindy Johnson of Camden, New Jersey, she was crowned the queen of her very own prom.

"I'm so blessed with my family. They're so great. They're so great. I'm so happy," said Johnson.

She would’ve had this night of wonder back in 1977, but missed it since she was pregnant with her son, Manny.

Johnson ended up leaving high school to raise her young family.

"She did what she had to do to make sure that we were right. We stayed in school and everything and had to do what we had to do. She did a good job with it, so she deserves it," said son Manny Hernandez.

“She always motivated us to do everything, and she's almost like our halo," said daughter Diona Hernandez.

The kids set up the event in her honor, but first told her it was a company party hosted by a family member's job.

However, when Johnson walked in the room she started seeing so many familiar faces.

"I guess it was some kind of gala I was going to so I thought. I guess this is the gala," said Johnson.

Johnson was overcome with emotion.

"I don't even know if I’m going to be able to give this speech now,” she said. "I love them. They are gorgeous."
