Black Bear Spotted In Bensalem Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
BENSALEM, Pa. -

Sightings of a black bear in a Bucks County neighborhood have residents buzzing.

The bear first appeared near the Bucks Meadow’s Apartments off of Knight’s Road behind the Bensalem Police Department.

Officials believe this is the second time in just days the same bear has shown up.

Fox 29’s Chris O’Connell reports.

State Game officials say they've been close to catching the 125 pound bear several times, but they're having problems with spectators that keep scaring the bear away.

"They need to catch the bear. We have as you see, a barbecue with kids and families out there, it's dangerous," said resident Jenny Rosato.

Fox 29 was there when Game officials set the bear trap in a secret location in the woods, using donuts, maple syrup and vanilla extract as bait.

"I've been to the zoo plenty of times, but never seen a bear 15 feet away from me. It was in your front yard. Literally," said resident Jermar Washington.

The bear was spotted several times in the area since Friday. Since then, finding the bear has been like a tourist attraction.

"The cops told us to stay inside because the bear is around here," said resident Valentin Flores.

Officials say that's the problem. Curious onlookers are scaring the bear away and preventing his capture.

"I darted him Friday night, but he ran off with my tranquilizer dart after the public scared him off," said Pa. Game Commission Official Chris Heil.

Game officers say the 125 pound male bear, who is already tagged, probably made his way from the Poconos and is searching for new territory.

They're warning anyone who comes in contact with the bear to call police immediately.

"It's a wild animal and its unpredictable and those people that are trying to get pictures, and trying to see the bear are a hindrance and not a help at all," said Heil.

It’s not only a nuisance, but interfering with state officers can also be a crime.

Once the bear is caught, it will be taken and released in upstate Pennsylvania.
