Crowds Flock To The Shore For Memorial Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

Beachgoers aren't the only ones benefiting from a warm and sunny holiday weekend.

Business owners down the shore are hoping this is just the first of many jam-packed weekends to come this summer.

Fox 29's Dave Kinchen spent the day in Ocean City.

It's a party on the Ocean City Boardwalk, and this is a party that businesses are taking to the bank.

They're out in full force on the boards in Ocean City this Memorial Day weekend with a little extra help from mother nature.

"Being nice out, it's sunny, it's not raining anymore it's not too cold, it's perfect," said Jaclyn Jennings.

And that's just the way the boardwalk shops like it.

They are looking for a big business bang to kick off the unofficial start of summer.

They're cranking out a steady supply of sweets at Shriver's Salt Water Taffy.

As sweet toothed vacationers line up.

So busy, managers aren't quite sure how much product has been sold.

"It's hard to keep track because there's been so many people in and out so a lot of people buy things in bulk or anything," said manager Mimi Moore.

Ice cream is also part of the shore tradition, and they're whipping up big sales by the cone at Kohr's Bros.

"Hundreds of them. It’s been pretty busy today," said manager Randy Kohr.

They also say good weather is working wonders.

"The beaches are packed, the boardwalk is packed, so the business is booming right now . It’s a really good weekend so far," said Kohr.

Staff at the Ocean Café also are feeling pretty good about the turnout.

"It's steady. The weather's beautiful and I think yesterday it was supposed to rain, so maybe that's why a lot of people hesitated to come down," said owner of Ocean Café, Maria Duva.

There’s still one more day of festivities to go, and merchants hope this weekend is a good sign of things to come.

"Let's welcome summer 2014. Let’s all have a great season," said Duva.

More good news for Ocean City businesses, on a top 10 list of the best beaches in the state, Ocean City came in at number 1.
