Bear Spotted In Bucks County Euthanized After Being Hurt

BENSALEM, Pa. -

Bensalem police say a black bear that had been spotted in the area was euthanized early Monday after being found hurt.

According to police, the bear was found in the wood line behind Nifty Fifties. The Pennsylvania Game Commission was at the scene, determined the bear had suffered a broken leg, and decided to euthanize the bear around 1 a.m.

Officials believe the bear may have been hit by a car but say no one has come forward claiming to have done so.

Game officers had been worried about the male bear getting close to the people. They said the bear, which was already tagged, probably made its way from the Poconos and was searching for new territory.

Officials had set a trap of donuts, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to bait the animal.

On Sunday, the bear was caught on camera climbing a fence behind the Bucks Meadows Apartments.

On Friday, game officials were able to shoot the 125-pound bear with a tranquilizer dart, but before they could get close members of the public approached, and the bear took off in the woods before the sedative took effect.

That incident led officials to warn anyone coming into contact with the animal to call them immediately, saying it's not only a nuisance but interfering with state officers can also be a crime.
