South Jersey Animal Shelter Donation Jar Stolen

Posted: Updated:
VOORHEES, N.J. -

"Despicable." That's the only way Jason Martin can describe the thieves who made off with donations he was collecting for the Animal Orphanage of Voorhees.

"When things are clearly marked animal orphanage donations and you have the gall to take from that, there was no change left in there or anything," Martin explains.

It happened Sunday during an all-day barbeque Jason throws on Memorial Day weekend for his employees and friends. He uses tip donations from his pizza shop to throw the annual bash which attracts 300 people at his mom's Berlin home. As people entered there were donation buckets that were filling up all day. As evening approached, someone swiped all the cash.

"It wasn't even like they just swiped it and jammed it into their pockets. They made sure they took every red cent in there," said Martin.

"We depend on businesses like Jason to help us," explained Heater Grieco, a volunteer at the shelter who was still in disbelief.

Meanwhile, Jason went to right to Facebook and gofundme.com trying to recuperate the money that was stolen. People immediately started donating to help out.

"Maybe with all this exposure we'll raise even more money than we had originally done. It doesn't excuse what they did, but maybe there's silver lining in the cloud" said Martin.

If you want to donate you can go to Balsamo's Pizza's Facebook page or gofundme.com under "Help Replace Stolen Orphanage Money." You can also make donations at theanimalorphanage.org.
