The City of Philadelphia released a letter by Mayor Michael A. Nutter to officials with the United States Olympic Committee, informing them of the City's decision not to pursue the bidding process to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Mayor Nutter responded by saying, “we do believe that Philadelphia has what it takes to bid on and host an Olympic Games in the future, and will continue to foster our successful working relationship with the USOC and support their efforts."
The Executive Vice President, of Comcast Corporation, David L. Cohen, is one of the advisers of the team exploring hosting areas for the Olympics.
Cohen said, "I fully support the decision for Philadelphia not to pursue a 2024 Olympic bid at this time. We've looked closely at this opportunity over the past year with the City and a number of other key stakeholders, and agree that the timing is not right for Philadelphia."
Mayor Nutter noted the City's intent to focus on bidding for and hosting other major events in the future.
