Police: Suspect Charged In Community College Of Philadelphia Gun Incident

Spring Garden - The mother of suspect Ryan Fitch says her 23-year old son was standing up for his girlfriend when he may have lost his temper.

Fitch who is studying to be a nurse is at Central Detectives still being questioned for his role in a scary day at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Tonight, police detectives were hauling away the car driven by Fitch. Police say it's the car he was driving after taking off from the terrifying scene at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Fitch was taken into police custody after they say he pulled a gun on another student inside the west building at 17th and Spring Garden. His mother tells us another man’s advances on his girlfriend triggered the argument.

The report led to an hour long lockdown as Police SWAT Teams went room to room, looking for the gunman.

“He was pointing the gun at the student,” said student David Fowler.

Fowler was in chemistry class when he heard the commotion.

“As soon as the gun was pulled out everyone ran out of the classroom as fast as we could,” said Fowler.

90 minutes later the CCP was given the all clear when it was determined the gunman had fled.

Police recovered the gun and arrested Fitch without incident at his apartment in Northeast Philadelphia where neighbors say he lived for the past year.

"This is very shocking. Very shocking. Unfortunately, this is the norm for today. It's sad. Very sad," said neighbor Kathleen Lydon.

Fitch does have a permit to carry a firearm and has no prior criminal history. Police say it was never an active shooter situation, but had to put 2 other local high schools on lockdown as a precaution. The college was closed for the rest of the day.

Ryan Fitch was arraigned on Thursday afternoon on terroristic threats, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person charges, according to a spokesperson from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office

Bail has been set at $250,000. Fitch is due back in court on June 13th.
